I do not like secrets.
But I do like surprises.
It’s complicated.
Maybe it’s my advanced age and declining mental faculties- but I am so scared of messing up and letting a secret slip. So as much as I love to be in the know- I think I might be better off in the dark. So this week tested me in more ways than one.
The week started off with a friend reaching out to see if I would make gender reveal cupcakes for her. Just a few so their son could find out if he was getting a sister or a brother. I immediately said “of course” and her sister sent the gender to me via text. BUT I spent the next 24 hours PETRIFIED that I would let the gender slip. I finally told my friend I could not talk/text with her until the reveal. It was tooooo muchhhhh pressure!
And this was on top of perhaps the biggest secret mission of my life.
Back in 2020, I had planned a surprise party for Lil’s 16th birthday. Literally the day before the party, Covid became a real thing. Nothing had shut down yet, but hosting a bunch of teenagers seemed like a bad idea. So I canceled it. Such a bummer. I still have the fondant from the cake in our basement fridge. Not sure why….
Last week, Lil turned 21. She was on spring break with her college friends, but we were able to celebrate as a family the weekend before she left. It was a pretty lame celebration. I was exhausted from puppyhood. She asked for work clothes (for the internship she was then rejected from). Izzy was working….so the celebration was lack luster.
But what Lil didn’t know at the time was that we had planned a surprise 21st birthday celebration for this weekend! We rented a house in Davidson, within walking distance of campus. Anyone who knows me knows I love a 6 foot sub for a party. So I found a place in North Carolina (via NY!) that makes them, and had them delivered to a house I have never seen!! I made way more cookies than necessary and even had Taylor make her amazing custom sugar cookies. And like any other crazy person, we strapped our frozen drink machine in with a seat belt and left McLean first thing Friday morning- hence why we didn’t “bake” last week! Thanks to Lil’s friends, we lured her to a house under the premise that they were looking at used furniture for their off campus house. Maggie took it to the next level- and told them that the house was owned by the sister of a woman her mom works with…..Michelle Wu!
I will share pics/ videos- but it was a perfect weekend. And I think we are all relieved to no longer be living a lie!
